Area Police
Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident rendered him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the death of nine people by a assailant aiming at residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
